This week, we are excited to share some big news: we will be opening a new division in Charleston, South Carolina. The Coastal Carolina division will be our fifth location in the Carolinas, with existing sites in Columbia, SC, Charlotte, NC, Greensboro, NC and Raleigh, NC.
Leading the Coastal Carolina division will be Al Mund, General Manager. A seasoned staircase professional with over 30 years of industry experience, Al was one of Southern Staircase’s first employees when he joined the team in the mid-1980s. Over the years, Al gained invaluable experience as an integral member of the team, serving in both sales and operational roles. Al also led the startups of several satellite facilities before briefly leaving the organization to pursue other interests. Please join us in welcoming Al back to the team.
While the location is not brand new to our organization – we operated in Charleston until 2011 following the economic downturn – we are thrilled for the opportunity to return to the Lowcountry area. With the influx of auto and aerospace companies, the coastal population is quickly growing.
President Randy Scott, weighs in: “We are very excited for the opportunity to re-enter the Charleston market. With Al’s expert leadership, we look forward to returning to the Lowcountry to support local builders as they strive to meet the rapidly growing demand for custom construction in the area.”
Top Trends in Coastal Stair Design
In honor of the Charleston expansion, we have highlighted five popular trends in coastal stair design.
Spiral Stairs for Interior and Exterior Spaces
With a small footprint and whimsical appeal, spiral staircases are a popular choice for coastal homes. Often incorporated in interior and exterior settings, well-constructed spiral stairs offer the perfect blend of function and style.
Modern, Contemporary Stair and Handrail Systems
For many, coastal design brings to mind sophisticated styles with clean lines and minimalist elements. Many of our coastal staircase customers select modern design elements like glass, stainless steel, and cable rail to open up their spaces, let natural light in, and even enhance ocean views.
Minimalist Cable Railing Systems for Exterior Stairs
With their sleek, modern look, cable railing systems can enhance any staircase or balcony. In addition to clean lines and contemporary appeal, cable rail offers outstanding durability, creating a perfect fit for outdoor coastal stairs.
Custom Wrought Iron Balusters
Another popular coastal design element is wrought iron. Hand-forged by our team in our metal fabrication facility, wrought iron is highly versatile and can be crafted to fit the style of any coastal home or commercial space.
Classic “Charleston-style” Wooden Balusters
For coastal customers seeking a more traditional feel, Charleston-style wooden baluster systems offer the epitome of charm.
Whether your style is modern or classic, our team can design and deliver the perfect staircase for your coastal residential or commercial space.
